Coach Cassidy’s Dragon Boat Journey
In early 2016, Cassidy found himself wandering in the vast void of self-discovery. A higher power illuminated a doorway, and though he was skeptical, a friend led him through to one of the greatest paths of his life: paddling a dragon boat.
Since then, Cassidy has embarked on a shared journey of growth and self-improvement, not only personally but with a team that has become his family. It’s been an exciting road, learning the timing and techniques needed to become a proficient paddler. He has attended skill camps in Melbourne, FL, and Myrtle Beach, SC, advancing his skills on this incredible journey.
In 2017, Cassidy learned to stern a boat and became the primary stern for Motley Crew until 2021, when they welcomed and trained other teammates to assist in this role. In 2021, he became one of the coaches, working alongside their head coach to improve every member and build their team to the fifty-plus members it is today.
In 2022, Cassidy started coaching and steering for the festival side of 22 Dragons, a dragon boat club based in Montreal, Canada. With 22 Dragons, he has traveled across the United States, coaching community teams and leading them to victory in their local festivals. He continues to do this during the seasons as his time allows.
As he gazes into the horizon of what may come, Cassidy’s eyes focus on where this team can go. His current dream is to assemble a team to compete in the 2025 Pan Am Americas Club Crew Championships in Montreal. After that, who knows? The sky has no limit.
